Wednesday Review: Porco Rosso

“If you make money from war, you’re a scum. If you can’t make money from bounty hunting, you’re an idiot!” – Piccolo, arms dealer

Porco Rosso appears to be the only Studio Ghibli film that has a male protagonist. Yet, it still posseses what I would call the ‘Miyazaki trademarks’ – the lack of antagonist and the element of magic (though this was not emphasized in the story). It tells the legend of Porco Rosso, a seapilot bounty hunter whose face was transformed into that of a pig by a mysterious curse.

Porco Rosso is set in the Adriatic Sea, as well as in Milan, Italy. Prior to the curse (which was never be shown in the film), he is known as Marco Pagot. He was a WWI ace pilot in the Italian Air Force, but decided to quit and led a solitary life as a bounty hunter.

Miyazaki stated that “When a man becomes middle-aged, he becomes a pig.” It was not only age that magically transformed Porco into a pig. The story was set during the Great Depression in the late 20’s. During the time that Porco was in the Italian Air Force, fascism was on the rise. When asked to go back to the Air Force and use his aviation skills for Italy, Porco merely said, “I’d rather be a pig than a fascist.”

Porco’s transformation into a pig is symbolic of his desire to revert to his ‘animal nature.’ Like a pig, Porco became self-absorbed and materialistic. Yet, this resolution was also a result of the death of his best friend and his other co-pilots during the war. This was beautifully depicted in the ‘cloud’ story that Porco told Fio. Initially, I thought it was a group of meteorites in orbit. As it drew closer, it revealed a cloud of dead pilots making their final flight. The sight was eerily beautiful.

At first, I thought the film was boring. (This probably explains why I fell asleep in the first 15 minutes of the film when I watched it with Gelo a few years ago. Haha.) But I eventually learned to appreciate the film when Porco’s internal conflict was revealed and when the film started showing flying sequences (first scene not included).

So… Did Porco turn into a human again? It was never shown in the film, but two things confirmed it. The first was Fio’s mention of the ‘frog prince,’ and the second was when Curtis cried, “Your face!” after Fio stole a kiss from Porco. Overall, Porco Rosso is a good movie, but it’s not something you can watch over and over again.

Club Spotlight: Animated Perspectives

I have a confession to make folks. My name is Aisha and I’m an addicted to anime. My uncle first got me into it when I watched the movie Akira. Although I didn’t understand the movie at the time, I fell in love with anime.

I try to keep it subtle as to not startle anyone. If you were to enter my dorm room now, the only hint of anime you would see are some of my shirts, which lay hidden in my dresser drawers. I just realized that I didn’t bring any anime from home with me. I usually do to convert a fellow friend or suitemate.

Nowadays, you can find anime addicts anywhere. My suitemate admitted that she was one. The only reason that she wouldn’t watch anime with me is because she would watch it all day and not get any work done.

Now, I know some of you are thinking, “Oh, she’s into that kind of anime.” No I am not into hentai (anime porn). It reminds me of when the anime channel (yes there’s an anime channel. If you have iO, it’s on channel 507 and I’m proud to know it.) went down at my house and the repair guy came to fix it. It was him, my father and me in my room. The repair guy said something like, “Oh, is this those X-rated cartoons,” as he proceeded to click on the category big robots (I can’t remember the exact name at the moment but I guess I knew what he was into). After fast forwarding on the anime he choose and saw that there wasn’t any type of sexual activity, he stopped the show and was on his way. I wanted to say yea jerk but I couldn’t. If he had clicked on another anime a couple of slots down, I would have been in trouble. Too much cleavage and panty showing with bloody noses would have been hard to explain to my father.

Tenjho Tenge: An anime that I watch. Fighting is the only type of action that you will see.

Anyway, I plan on stopping by the Animated Perspectives Club in the Union. It’s open Monday through Friday from 10am to 9pm. I find it funny that it’s open so early. It’s like if someone needs that daily dose of anime, they can wake up and walk to the Union.

The website doesn’t really look like it’s been updated since 2008. But I’m going to take their word on the hours.

Animated Perspective also has an extensive Lending Library of anime and manga (comic book that is read from right to left). That puts a smile on my face just thinking about it. You know how people sit in Borders and read the books that you know they’re not going to pay for. It’s like I can do that at this club and not feel bad when I put the manga back. I can also watch as much anime as I want and not be criticized because other people will be watching it too.

I must admit that I’ve been trying to make  it my mission to visit this club, but I’ve been too scared. I’m into anime, but I don’t know much. I don’t want some hardcore fanatic rattling off names and titles I never heard of. I’ll feel like I’m missing out on the larger world of anime and sad that I can’t contribute to the conversation. But I’m ready.

Help me get up to date on my anime. Comment on my blog and tell me some anime that I should watch. Right now the current names of anime that I’m watching are:

  1. Kiba
  2. Alice Academy
  3. Gun Frontier

Manga that I’ve been reading are:

  1. Naruto
  2. One Piece

Now with the manga, I don’t go online and read them, I buy them. So before you tell me what happened in episode 150, ask me what I know. I also buy my anime if I’m not already watching it on the anime network. So, I still haven’t finished watching Tenjho Tenge. But let me know. Show me and anime some love and comment away.

Oh The People I Meet

Downtown Ithaca had it’s annual Apple Harvest Festival this weekend, and I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a couple dozen fans of various things wandering around. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to people-watch when you’re standing amongst thousands of festival-goers.

The shops downtown, however, give people-watchers such as myself a much easier venue for finding fan cultures. I stopped briefly inside Comics For Collectors again, and was happy to see a group of women entering the shop looking for Buffy comics.

But the real surprise yesterday came when the group I was with took refuge from the rain inside a hobby shop. We spent a quarter-hour chatting amongst ourselves about card collections, and somehow the topic of anime came up (something very near and dear to the hearts of my friends). A girl sitting at the register nearby casually said “are you guys all anime fans?”. It turns out that she had a general interest in anime, but regretted not knowing as much about the genre as she would like. While she may not have neccessarily been a fan of anime, it warmed my heart to hear that interest is becoming more widespread and common. Being an anime fan no longer has the stigma of being “uncool”. Instead, the girl behind the counter at a local store can turn out to be a supporter of the anime culture.

Up until maybe six or seven years ago, many anime fans felt like outcasts with no acceptance as a fan culture by the general public. But, as my encounter yesterday might suggest, an understanding of anime is growing. While not a large fan herself, the girl working at the shop turned out to understand a great deal about the culture. And for the general public to understand something is a huge victory for all fan cultures

Picture Of The Week

By ~O-mie

Hello,

Here’s the PotW, it’s called “Moonlore: Sankke” by one of my favourite artists ~O-mie.  O-mie does lots of fantasy work and what I love about her art is in lots of cases she uses a glow-like effect to her colored pictures.  It makes the picture’s colores flow in an interesting way; at least that’s what I think.

See you next week for the next picture.

Cheers,

i'm so thankful it's the weekend

i am beyond exhausted.  i think between crazy work, everyday personal chores, scrapbooking, and sleeping, i’m extended 6 ways to sunday.  it doesn’t help that i’m having monthly feminine issues, too.  ugh ~_____~;;   i hate that every weekend i seem to be sleeping just so that i can make it through another work week.  i guess that’s just the reality of life, though.  ah well.

had to cancel with mizue earlier this week because i had a headache that night.  hoping to meet up with her again later this week.  she emailed me to tell me that she went to mitsuwa in new jersey and bought me a shodo text book that we could work through together.  she’s SO nice.  on a side note, i think the shodo that i did for my co-worker turned out pretty well considering how little time i had to prepare and practice.

been gabbing with teruyo on fb.   i miss her so much!  i’ve been feeling so nostalgic as i scrapbook through everything.  march still feels so far away even though i know it’s only half a year.  i wish i could go back this week.  have continued to apply for japanese positions starting in march.  found a kyoto arts residency that i may apply for as well.  it’s for a short time, but is a paid residency for artists to create their artwork in the area.  i’m thinking how awesome it would be to compose pieces about uji.    i never thought i’d be able to make a living immediately out of college composing or singing; especially in this economic climate.   it’s a pretty long shot, but what the heck.  also applied for a teaching program for teaching english at the university level.  it sounds soooo good to me.  the hours are longer than with other companies, but it sounds more like the kind of english tutoring/teaching work and age group that i enjoy.  here’s hoping that i am contacted!!

finished Geass season 1…how could they end it there!?!?  holy crap.  started season 2 and thought i had the wrong series for a moment until i realized that there was something very funky going on in the storyline.  now i’m just mostly annoyed that the climax of the first season was a fake out and that i have to wait for essentially the same thing to happen again so that i can see what finally happens.  …that is unless there’s a 3rd season and they do it again or worse yet give us a half-assed CLAMP-esque ending.  for all my CLAMP-loving ways, i have to say that their endings are usually really lame…so here’s hoping that the writers of Geass, at least, are able to pull something better out of their asses. ~____~;;

Too many things to see in Kyoto and way too little time

After strolling around the streets near to the central station in Kyoto I headed for some of the better known tourist spots. The only problem is that most of the sites are located on the outskirts of the town which males it very difficult to see a lot in one day. And keep in mind I was still hurting from wandering all around Osaka yesterday, so this became a test of endurance.

The first place I wanted to go to was the Fushimi-Inari shrine in the southeast. This place is most famous for the enormous amount of gates built right into the forest. Apparently the god of the shrine is believed to bring good fortune in business so the gates have been donated by people in search of fortune for their shop or business. I read somewhere that it was only a ten minute footwalk from the central station, but that turned out to be a misunderstanding. It took me around 45 minutes to get to the shrine, passing train tracks, a sports festival at a school and finally a temple area which began to stretch out right next to a loud street. Tofukuji is a very nice place and stretches over a huge area. At some point I wasn’t sure whether all the buildings belonged to the temple or whether they were simply normal houses of people. Whatever they were, the sight was very beautiful. I passed a lot of huge gates, crossed a bridge in what looked like a park area (with another bridge crossing the same valley-like setting slightly higher than the one I took) and went back to the street going parallel to the train tracks which led to Nara.

I finally reached Fushimi-Inari through a side gate after seeing a lot of flags with a fox on it on the street I had been following. The fox is the animal which is worshipped at Fushimi-Inari so it’s basically everywhere. The main buildings look like any other shrine but once you climb up a little into the forest you enter the vast amount of gates set up one after another. At first I went through a set of bigger gates which then led to a junction which divided the way into two smaller archways. The feeling was a bit strange as it felt slightly claustrophobic walking through the red posts, but after a short time I reached an open space with a few buildings on it. To my left another, this time again bigger, archway was opening up which I used to climb down again from the mountain.

After reaching the train station for Kyoto I was a bit startled that even japanese trains can have a delay (which in my case were only 3 minutes, but well…). Back in central Kyoto I bought a day pass ticket for the subway and bus service (1.200 yen) and set off for Kinkakuji. I wanted to take the bus, but the quques were so long I decided to go down stairs to enter the subway which took me to the old imperial court. But that site is closed to the public and only the northern area is accessible so I went west for the old shogunate castle Nijo.

Nijo is a lot smaller than the imperial court, but impressive nonetheless. I entered it through the main gate and went inside taking off my shoes at the entrance (something, just like in Nikko, is an impossible task to do for foreigners). The halls and rooms had a lot of explanations in english and some even contained figures of the personel which used to live her, giving a very thorough impression of what it might have looked like 400 years ago. The house was huge and it took me some time to walk through it. Each step made a squirking sound which is intentional as it was used to recognize intruders back then. Going out into the hot sunlight again I walked a little bit through the castle garden and then headed for the bus stop to finally go to Kinkakuji.

Travelling by bus in Kyoto is rather easy as the streets are organised like a chess boad and the station names usually consist of the street the bus is currently driving on and the street the bus is crossing. At Kinkakuji the expected hordes of tourists flooded the area so it was easy to find the entrance right away. Here as well a broad forest way leads up to the entrance and after a light turn to the right you stand in front of the most photographed building in Japan. Of course, there were a lot of people taking pictures today as well, and count me in. The sight is very awesome, a golden building on the banks of a small lake with the mountains in the back. This might sound a bit cheesy and a lot like a postcard picture, but when you stand in front of the temple in person it’s very impressive indeed. Behind the temple and the lake, a stone stircase leads up to a second level where there is a second, smaller lake with a couple of other buildings near it. The walk through the area is short, but the admission (400 yen) was worth every yen.

After going back to the inner city I decided it was time for something more contemporate and so I searched for the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Mangas might be one of the main things that get people interested into Japan today as they are sold all over the world and the corresponding television series are kid favourites everywhere, I guess. The museum itself isn’t as impressive as some might think, but that’s because it’s not normal. You enter and then hve the chance to dive into a lot of books, just grab the one you like. Yes, set in a former elementary school the yard can be used just to lie down there with a book and read for hours and hours. They even have a section fr foreigners where mangas in all kinds of languages are stored for your pleasure. The lady at the admission was even apologizing that they only had so little variety of german books. But, she reminded me, the museum was open until 8 pm and the admission was valid the whole day. So if I left I could come back anytime and read something more. I didn’t go for reading and instead walked through the building which had permanent installations explaining the evolvement of manga culture from the 18th centry until today, but also special exhibitions of Bome, a figurine artist (they displayed a huge number of female figurines) and of sketches done by Miyazaki Hayato of Ghibli studios. Definetely worth the visit.

I got hungry after leaving the museum and searched for a small shop in the inner city labyrinth of shopping districts and small streets. I settled for katsu donbori at a small price, which wasn’t special, but very tasty and satisfying, giving me strength to walk around some more.

I then headed back to the central station to buy some stamps for postcards but on the way I recognized the battery of my camera was running low. Had I gone to the hotel to recharge it it would have been to late to go to other places. I tried to find a bus to Ginkakuji, a temple in the east of the city, but when looking at the timetables I saw it might have become very hard to come back easily, so I dismissed the idea and really headed back to the hotel. A little rest would be fine as well, after running around for such a long time during the past few days.

So tomorrow I will head out down south a little further. A friend informed me this morning that she found a hostel for me somewhere near Kumamoto and we will have the chance to go for a little sightseeing on Sunday.

And now I will turn my attention to the last innings of the Softbank Hawks vs Nippon Ham Fighters baseball game which is shown live on TV.

Got a Pocketful of Rainbows, Don't Know What to Do With 'Em

Others and I will be attending the Union Square showing of the one-night-only US theatrical premiere of Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven: Good night, sleep tight, young lovers, which is sure to be a rip-roaring good time and a great way to spend an evening. I’ve actually already seen the movie, but I wouldn’t pass the chance up to see it in a theater. The theater showing will be dub only, but it isn’t that much of a problem, and I’m interested in seeing how the dub crew tackles this movie.

If you want to read my review of the the E7 movie, it’s right here.

I also managed to win a copy of volume 1 of the Eureka Seven light novel adaptation, so there’s a good chance I’ll be reviewing that some time in the future. Who knows when though; I still have a Gundam 00 Second Season Review to write!

Broken Blade,The Anime

Higashi no Eden

The King of Eden.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 23

"I see...I've fallen in love with him."

And well we all know Ed likes Winry, I mean after all he’s been rejected by her “once” but now he’s getting taller so she’s all like “ooh yea baby”. Hooray for the anime series not cutting corners for Ed x Winry In other news,  Shin asked me last week what ever happened to the loli:

She's back just for ya.

Gluttony is so gross lol. He’s turned into a giant mouth next episode. I may have to start backlogging FMA since there’s not gonna be any new EdWin scenes for a while.

Picture of the Week

By =ravenskar

Hello everyone,

This weeks post is brought to you by =ravenskar called “Bitch Got Steampunk n Cannon”.  Are we even aloud to say “bitch” in WordPress?  Well anyway, I picked it because of the great coloring, design and has the look of as if it was a painting on parchment.  Very nice probably a 9/10, I’d give it a full ten but something about the face doesn’t really work for me.  Hope you like this weeks pic and see ya next week.

BTW I just got a job interview for monday! XD

Cheers,

Chrno Crusade (クロノ クルセイド)

This show was the ultimate one for my friends. For me, I still have better ones than this that i like. Oh but im not saying i hated it. I LOVED it. I just loved…. some other anime more.

Summary:

Author: Daisuke Moriyama

Genre: Action-Adventure, Drama, Romance

Episodes: 24

Chrono Crusade is set in the height of the Roaring Twenties, where jazz is king, bootleg liquor flows freely, and the mob rules the streets. It is a time of prosperity, luxury and decadence, and the division between rich and poor grows even wider in the wake of the First World War. It is at such times of great change and upheaval that the dark things that lurk below the world of man can come to the surface. In the world of Chrono Crusade, a fictional organization known as the Order of Magdalene (or more specifically, the characters of Sister Rosette Christopher and her soul-bound demon partner, Chrono) exists to fight the demonic threats that appear with increasing regularity across America. Both Rosette and Chrono are revealed during the course of the story to be driven by a shadowy past, centered around a search for Rosette’s lost brother, Joshua. Joshua is shown to have been taken from her by the sinner, Aion, a devil who shares a dark and bloody history with Chrono, and seeks nothing less than to overthrow Heaven and Earth.

The anime follows the manga through the first half, but it diverges halfway through, creating different courses of events and endings. The characterization of some the characters, including Rosette and Aion, and their roles in the story were changed in the adaptation of the manga. Much of the story is driven by the individual pasts of the main characters and the complex relationships between them.

Chrono and Rosette in the Anime (Doesn’t chrono look a bit like Rei from Beyblade???)

English for Lyrics for Mitsu no Yoake from Spice and Wolf II

From the sleeper’s breathe the morning quietly comes

Right now, your dreams race in the forest

In search of the awakening light

If it is lost, it shall be found

Hidden within our future.

Hey, in this place,

Once hands are held, don’t let them part.

With you, far away

Memories bloomed within the distant day.

A blue country comes into sight, STORY

Your brilliant eyes do tell.

A sweet and misty hum grown cold

Upon quivering shoulder-tops, love pauses.

Memories…Ah, who is it that’s restraining them?

If the day shines, then don’t return to the past

It may be a mistake, but I will walk upon the chosen road.

I’ve heard the most important words

The wind carries the sky’s promises

Say if time takes you away..

Right now, like this, it’s simply the two of us.

Simply the two of us.

Your smile is a thing to protect.

Shall we try out the heart’s strength

Ah, you turn about-

And now the commencing morning’s birds sing.

Hey, in this place,

Once hands are held, don’t let them part.

With you, far away

Memories bloomed within the distant day.

A blue country comes into sight, STORY

Your brilliant eyes comes into sight, STORY

Brilliant eyes, tell me about that song.

- Sabado 12 de Septiembre (Tarde): Spice and Wolf II Cap 10

Y SOLO no puedo.

Saludos

Y participen!

My first impression of Trinity Blood.

As the title says, I’ve started watching Trinity Blood and at the moment, I’m on episode 6. The episodes I have seen have been good, kept me entertained and interested throughout the whole episodes. The characters are made in such a way that they are easily likable. From what I’ve grasped of the story so far, it seems to be vampires vs. “Terrans” or humans in english. This priest Abel Nightroad are working for XA (A really long organization-name I can’t be bothered to type in right now) and the main goal is to keep the peace between the two races so another war doesn’t start. The thing about Abel though is that he can turn into this really cool “Cruznik” which is hungarian for Vampire-killing Shaman or  something I think. I’m sorry I can’t remember all the details. It’s quite late when I’m writing this and it’s pretty hard to remember every single detail of all the episodes I watched.

Anyway, the anime is animated by GONZO and I really, really like the character designs and the backgrounds. The CG is well-made too. I’d say it still looks good compared to newer series, and TB was made in 2005. So far I’m liking the cast of the show too. There’s Abel (the priest I just wrote about), the little girl with mystical powers (she can like do some crazy shit to people’s minds if she touches them =p), Esther, who is a really cute sister or nun or whatever (=p) driven by revenge, ultimately finding a new hope in Abel. There is the bad guy who actually ain’t a bad buy, but he did bad stuff because he’s loved one was killed by someone.

The music is pretty atmospheric and well done. I liked both the OP & ED & actual music in the show. It set my mood exactly right at each “moment”. The OP made me really want to watch the episode and the ED really wanted me to watch the next episode. This post turned out way longer than I thought it’d be. Guess it’s this “Ooh, I finally got myself a blog so now I have to write tons of stuff”-feeling that is still in me. =p Ohwell, now it’s time for me to hit the sack, so good night. Oh and btw, enjoy Abel’s awesomeness:

Urasawa finiquita Mangari Michi ^-^

Aoi Hana 09

Kawaiii I loved this episode.

Allthough this is the typical summer house anime episode. It really did manage to make a turn off event’s that no one really expected. The serious mood was overtroun by the girls playing  ”lost kyoko” but still the episode managed to maintain all it’s dignity. And it was lot’s of fun to watch. And the ending was really something.

Summary:

All the gang is going round in a car to the road trip. Achan and her brother sitting up front. Kyoko and Fumi in the middle. And the rest on the back. Achan kept fighting with her brother. And the girl’s in the back say no bickering. When they arrive at the house. They decide to go play some tennis. The girls of course. Achan’s brother is stuck playing golf. Then they decide to go for a walk in the park. Which is really good. Because some things happen in there that they wouldn’t happen unless they were there. For example Achan falling off tiny cliff into Fumi’s Arm’s. So romantic. After all this is a groundbreaking series in what we like to call yaoi and yuri. Non the less, Achan and Fumi are sleeping in the same room. We also learn about a romantic story from Kyoko and whoever the other guy was. Non the less Fumi and Achan are sleeping in the same room. (*wink*) The next day they go out for camping, with campfire and everything. And they tell some Ghost stories. Achan looked cute in those pigtails. Then they go for a night walk in the park. From which whoever gets something from the path. Win’s something. I wasn’t really paying attention. And at the end, Fumi and Achan look at the sky and see all the country stars. And they stay up late and have sex. Just kidding.

Opinion

I really liked this episode because it was well paced and all that. But It still was the typicical summer house anime episode. But it still managed to bring something fresh to the table. I loved it non the less. Not like Bakemonogatari that I had really high hopes for. But apparently nothing is happening now. :/. okay bye now.

Are you enjoying the Time of EVE?

School has begun, and for my last year in college, I have decided that I will try different things. Thus, on a whim, I decided to check out my school’s anime club when I got the club’s flyer.

Yesterday was the first showing of the semester, and it was my first time ever at any anime club. I simply really never had any friends who are into anime, manga, or the whole otaku culture, and it never occured to me to join an anime club. When I approached the lecture hall where the showing was, I met several rather interesting individuals. Most veteran members and officers are very nice.

After a brief introduction to the club, the showing began. They showed the first five episodes of Time of EVE (EVE no Jikan). I had not heard of this series before. It was amazing; simply just very wonderful; the kind of sci-fi anime that I really really enjoy. I will be sure to watch episode six of EVE no Jikan when that comes out.

(This is a very nice fan art of Konata.)

What was not so great were the shrieking laughs of the other members (or a particular member). She has a rather annoying screech. I do not particularly mind a few chuckles here or there, but… I suppose Konata was right when she says anime is something personal and should be enjoyed as such.

Further, during introduction and intermission, the club officers just seem a bit… disorganized, uncharismatic, and immature. I have been very involved with quite a few activities and student organization on campus, and we have done great things, from setting up student-run free clinics to building houses for the homeless. Comparatively, the anime club have trouble even just getting through events in a timely manner. Seriously, cut out the immature internet memes and the stupid overdone jokes that just are not funny. And things are not cooler just because you add “epic” to every other word.

Or most likely I’m just being overly critical of a “fun club” because I did not win the raffle for the item I rather wanted. I have also been in quite a negative mood recently… I actually do feel kind of bad about being so harsh… But it’s the internet; everyone can be meaner.

Anyway, watching a wonderful high quality anime projected onto a huge screen, sitting in comfortable, relaxing chairs in a darkened, theater-like hall was still quite an experience. I did enjoyed my Time of EVE.

I cannot say the same for the club though.

I am sure I will go back again, if only to try to win the raffle for something else or check out their conventions, but I am not sure if I really want to participate in their weekly game nights. I would rather do better things in life.

My Anime Harem

I’ve noticed the spread of maiwaifu lists coming out of my blog reader. After ghostlightning’s post in June, I read digiboy’s on the 20th of August, ETERNAL’s on the 30th and Kairu’s the next day.   I wanted to join in the trend, but as I have a marvelous 3-D waifu who fulfills all my needs AND brooks no rivals (not even animated ones) I decided to come up with one of them anime harems.  I know this is sooo 2008 but anyways, concubines are not wives so I think this is a perfectly acceptable thing for me to do…

I limited myself to characters in anime shows that I have finished watching (for once my MAL anime list came of use!!!).  So without further ado, here it is!!  The harem:

Ecco Seraglio!

I guess there’s not much to explain when it comes to a harem, but as you’ve possibly come to expect intricate pseudo-philosophical explanations from this blog, I’ll explain my choices a bit [NOTE: "R" stands for "rockin'", "B" stands for "body", "A" stands for "awesome", "H" stands for "hair"]

Blair: RB + AH + I like cats

CC: RB + AH + I like pizza too

Jung-Freud: E = RB²

Maetel: (AH x 999) + mysterious nature

Medusa: soulmate [emphasis on mate, though]

Asuka Langley Sohryuh: RB + AH + positive attitude to life in general

Tsubaki Nakatsukasa: RB + kindness

Chihiro Shindoh: eyepatch + voice + moe

If you think it’s weird that I’ve put three characters from Soul Eater in there, know that I was tempted to make the harem exclusive to that series (Eruka, Chrona, Mizune, Maka etcetera etcetera).

Chihiro Shindoh from the ef shows might seem out of place here.  Indeed, she even looks nervous next to the other gals.  Actually, she would be near the top of maiwaifu list if I were to make one, but even so I think she’d be a great calming presence (along with Tsubaki) over the harem as a whole.

But of course, the key to a happy and successful harem is the careful arrangement of living quarters.  Fortunately, I have read the entirety of The Tale of Genji and thus consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject.  Here’s the layout of my quarters, based on the basic Heian period pattern shinden-zukuri (for future reference, check out this great article on  shinden-zukuri).

That red thing is a bridge, yo!

BTW, I’d be in the Main Hall.

1) The Fishing Pavilion – this is where anyone can go chill out when they’re angry.  Take it out on the carp, I say.

2) The Western Pavilion – CC and Blair live here.  They can gossip and do each other’s hair.

3) The hut – Medusa stays here.  I’m scared she’d destroy the residence with all of her magic and taking over the world business.  In any case, I think she’s somewhat of a loner.  But notice the secret serpentine underground passageway connecting to the Main Hall…

4) The Northern Pavilion – Maetel and Jung-Freud’s abode.  I reckon Jung-Freud has enough spacefaring experience to get into some interesting conversations with Maetel.  Besides, they both seem to enjoy shower scenes so this pavilion comes with a large bath.

5) The Northeastern Pavilion – Asuka can knock herself out here (padded walls).  I mean, I hope she’s got her demons under her control but just in case she doesn’t I’ve arranged for this place that is easily accessed by:

6) The Eastern Pavilion – Chihiro and Tsubaki can take turns looking over Asuka.  This will be the most peaceful of the pavilions no doubt.  And I figure they’re both early birds so they won’t mind the sunrise.  [Notice CC and Blair can sleep soundly in the Western Pavilion after doing each other.]

7) The Drunken Poetry Party Pavilion – Overlooking the pond, but not quite reaching it, some awesome parties can be had here.  No doubt.

…after doing each other’s hair!  Sorry #6 got cut off.
